"By filling a bladder inside its body with a flammable gas, it floats through the air while breathing through its skin. It absorbs electricity using its spiny fins, and will discharge lightning bolts from them as a combat technique."

:new: 4/9/19 UPDATE: New design!

This was one of those old, forgotten designs that I took one look at and said "yep, this one seriously needs a revision". To this end I decided to give it a total overhaul, keeping only the barest essentials of the old version and a few bits and pieces I liked about him. I then simplified the design a great deal, while adding in a few new features for flair (the circuit-board-like markings on the fins and the bony head protuberance in particular). It was a lot harder to reconcile the markings of a real lionfish with the simplistic Pokémon style than I expected, but I managed to make it work with the aid of Discord friend feedback, so there's that. I also changed the name, since I felt that the old one didn't seem punny enough. I'm happy with this new look for him all in all, and hopefully he now has more personality to him than being just a literal fish out of water!

I have to take care of a real-life situation over the next few weeks or months, so fakemon progress will be quite a bit slower for me from here on out. Still, I'll try to update regularly and often! Anyhow. New fakemon. :D

A while ago, I created a contest entry for the Omnis Region where the objective was to create a Pokemon with Pokémon with a typing that's the opposite of what it'd be expected to be. One of the entries I came up with was a lionfish that wasn't Water/Poison type, but Fire/Electric type with a hot-air-balloon gas bladder and electric spines! I liked it enough to use it in my own region, so I gave it a name, a movepool, abilities, and a full stat spread. :)

I based the stat spread of Volterois off of Stunfisk, another non-Water fish with electric powers. From a stat spread of 109/66/84/81/99/32, I started by transferring a point from Sp. Atk to Sp. Def., then switching the attack stats around, and then Sp. Def. and Sp. Atk. I then transferred 8 points from HP to Speed, and cut down excess points to get 100 HP and a stat total of 470, the same as the single-stage Fire-type Torkoal and a point below Stunfisk. Finally, I switched Sp. Def and Attack for extra tankiness.

Move-wise, I took a cue from Torkoal's many moves, but also included the Electric-type moves of Stunfisk and the other electric fish, Lanturn. Torkoal lends starting moves Heat Wave, Protect, and Flail, as well as Ember, Smog, Smokescreen, FIre Spin, Flamethrower, and Inferno. Stunfisk lends Bide, Revenge, Bounce, and Thunder Shock, Discharge, and Thunderbolt. Lanturn provides starting move Thunder Wave, Stockpile/Swallow/Spit Up, Aqua Ring, Charge, and Electro Ball. And lastly, Poison Sting and Belch are there for flavor.

Volterois is a special tank, with poor speed, but solid defenses and a mighty Sp. Atk stat. Not only does he provide powerful Fire and Electric STAB, but he can also be bred with Water-type moves to take down Ground-types he can switch in on with Levitate. Alternatively, foes who try to take advantage of his low physical attack may be taken by surprise with HA Poison Point! Aqua Ring can also provide recovery, and Fire Spin can trap foes in place to allow him to finish them off. Feeling overwhelmed? Use Volt Switch to send in a stronger ally, or save yourself with Protect if you can predict their next move. Apart from that, though, his support options are somewhat limited - but support probably isn't the best role for something with deadly spines like that anyway. But when it comes to blasting and shocking your foes, you can always count on this unique, deadly beauty! :D
